Jewelry Care FAQ
Jewelry Care FAQ
We want your jewelry to look beautiful for as long as possible. Below answers to the questions we hear most often — so you can wear your pieces with confidence.
Understanding Your Jewelry
What does "gold-plated" mean?
Gold-plated jewelry has a base metal (such as brass or copper) coated with a thin layer of gold. Over time, the plating can wear away with friction, moisture, and exposure to chemicals, revealing the base metal beneath. How quickly this happens depends on the thickness of the plating, how often you wear the piece, and how well you care for it.
What is stainless steel jewelry?
Stainless steel is a solid alloy — not plated — so the metal composition is consistent throughout the piece. It is highly resistant to tarnish and corrosion and is generally considered more durable for everyday wear than plated metals.
How do I know what metal my piece is made of?
Each product page lists the materials used. If you cannot find this information, please contact us before purchasing and we will confirm the exact composition for you.
Water Exposure
Can I wear my jewelry in water?
Stainless steel pieces are highly water-resistant and can typically handle everyday splashes, hand-washing, and light rain without damage.
Gold-plated pieces should be kept away from water as much as possible. Water, sweat, and humidity accelerate plating wear. Remove plated pieces before showering, swimming, exercising, or washing dishes.
Tarnish & Discoloration
Why has my jewelry tarnished?
Tarnish occurs when metal reacts with moisture, oxygen, sweat, lotions, and perfume in the air. Gold-plated pieces are more susceptible because the thin gold layer can wear through to the base metal.
How can I slow down tarnish?
- Put your jewelry on last — after applying perfume, hairspray, lotions, and sunscreen.
- Remove pieces before exercise, swimming, showering, or sleeping.
- Wipe pieces gently with a soft, dry cloth after wearing to remove sweat and oils.
- Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and humidity.
Can tarnish be reversed?
Light surface tarnish on stainless steel can sometimes be buffed away with a soft cloth. For gold-plated pieces, tarnish often indicates the plating has worn through and cannot be fully restored at home.
Cleaning & Storage
How should I clean my jewelry?
- Use a soft, lint-free cloth to gently buff the surface after each wear.
- Avoid abrasive cloths, toothpaste, baking soda, or harsh chemical cleaners, which can scratch or strip the plating.
How should I store my jewelry?
- Store pieces individually in a soft pouch or a lined jewelry box to prevent scratching.
- Keep away from humid areas such as bathrooms.
